Understanding your strengths and your areas of opportunity for improvement is invaluable to your growth. Your strengths are often behaviors, characteristics, and skills that are perceived positively. Doing these things well is advantageous as you work towards your goals. Understanding those behaviors, characteristics, and skills that you need to work on developing is equally important. They can be hurdles as you work towards goals, so they present an opportunity for improvement.
For this assignment, you will assess the strengths you already possess that can help you meet your goals and identify your opportunities for improvement. These elements are part of the Week 5 Final Project: Personal Development Plan and will be shared with your peers in the Reflective Thinking discussion forum next week.

1. Write an academic SMART goal:
My main aim is to become a certified nurse by May of 2025. In order to complete this goal, I will first complete my BSN degree and then begin to complete hourly sessions at the local cancer center. My hours should be completed by the end of Autumn, 2025. Then I will apply and study for the certification test by the end of winter, 2021.

Specific Specific:
My goal is to become a RN nurse. I started my nursing career because of a car accident I was in. I want to be able to help someone like I was helped.. I want someone to look at me and say “ because of her I survived”. I want to be able to make a difference in patient’s care in a more relaxed setting. I plan on getting my certification after completing my BSN (Bachelors of Science in Nursing).

Measurable Measurable:
I plan on starting steps towards getting my certification once I have completed my BSN. I have to start with 1,000 hours of adult oncology nursing practice. I can do this by applying for a part time position and till working on my current unit part times as well. The next step is to complete a minimum of 10 contact hours of continuing nursing education.
Measuring the progress of my Smart Goal Plan will need me to keep a log of maintaining and recording communication events with patients as being “effective” or “not effective” for a 12-month period. These incidents to be measured are limited to interactions occurring during the administration of medications, discharge instructions and “end of life” discussions. The data collected will be analyzed in 3-month time intervals to evaluate the success of the goal. Improvement will be indicated by an increase in the percentage of effective communications events over time

I believe I will not be putting too much stress on myself by taking only one class at a time.

I plan on dropping back to part time at my current position in order to make my goal attainable without putting stress on me and allow me to help support my myself financially.

I will achieve my goal of becoming a Nurse by May 2025.
Professional SMART goal:
My professional SMART goal is to improve my communication skills since it is a very important to provide good communication with my patients.. “Effective communication is a core skill for all healthcare professionals and nursing staff in particular since nurses spend more time with patients and relatives than any other healthcare professional” (Bramhall, 2014, p. 14)
3. What is the value of creating SMART goals?
It is important to create my SMART objectives because it allows me to have clear and decisive goals in correlation to my company’s business plan. The goal of the objectives is to determine what my company plans to accomplish in addition to providing a measurement for the needs of hiring, training, staffing, and how to accomplish proper morale. When setting specific objectives, we need to ask ourselves who, what, where, when, and why, such as: What am I going to do? Why is it important to do this task? Who is going to be involved? When do I want this task to be completed? How am I going to do this task?
My aim of creating SMART goals is more likely to thrive because the goals are precise, and employees know correctly what needs to be achieved. Using this method postulates a clear path for my organization and employees to follow by defining the moralities of the training plan. In an addition, I will consider using my company’s SMART goals since they provide a solid structure for measurement, allowing everyone involved in the organization to track their progress and accomplishments while identifying specific areas for improvement.
