Social media interference is a trending issue in the health care system. When health care providers share their opinion using the platforms, they risk misinterpretation, which could expose them to breaking the HIPPA rules, primarily if they communicate with their patients. Social media provides a nurse a platform to exercise their freedom of speech, increasing the chances of violating HIPPA guidelines and jeopardizing the professional relationship between the patient and the health care expert (Wolfe, 2021). The professional always represents the facility they work for and themedical institution as a whole. This means that any action taken on social media creates a bias on the health care system. Therefore, health care providers need to be responsible with their opinions, and avoid any controversial topics since they are expected to be neutral on many issues for all patients to have faith in the health care services.


However, social media can be a valuable tool because health care providers can use it to educate the public on issues concerning health care towards the Healthy People Goal.Additionally, each citizen has the freedom of speech, meaning theyare at liberty to take any stand in support of their belief on the social platforms.On this point, HIPPA cannot legally restrict nurses from using social media to air their opinions, but protects the patient’s right to privacy. Thus, should these rights be violated by the health professionals as they exercise their freedomof speech, they will be held liable by the law(Omaggio, 2018).HIPPA suggests ways to use the platforms to air personal opinions on controversial issues, enabling the separation of private life to their profession. For example, the professional should consider getting involved in contentious debates anonymously, which would allow them to contribute to apressing issue and protect their career.
