In your second journal, I expect to see evidence of the design and conceptualization of
the interview questions based on the assigned readings. Please note that you should not
interview participants prior to receiving feedback from the instructor about the design of
the interview questions. I expect that you provide a rationale for the interview questions.
Differently put, explain how the questions relate to the goals of the research project and
how they reflect the themes addressed in the readings. I also expect to see a discussion of
how the assigned course materials and self-collected sources (secondary sources that are
not assigned) relate to your research project. A bibliography should be included in the
second journal as well as interview questions.
I have attached the first work journal and this is the prompt for the second. Please make sure the names and stories are the same. Please add interview questions and reflect on how they relate. 3-4 pages please

For many years, there has been a heated debate on whether women should be in combat. One quarter believes that women should be allowed in combat, while another holds that women should not be allowed in combat. The twenty-first century has seen the use of more advanced combat tactics and technologies in war. This has led to more soldiers being at greater risk, including women. There is evidence that women serving in the United States military are seeing combat. However, official United States policy has continued to prohibit women from taking up the majority of combat roles. Various arguments have been formulated to justify the practice of excluding women from combat. For example, the 1993 definition of direct ground combat bars women from units that face enemies with weapons on the ground. However, it is essential to note that exposure to risk alone is not enough reason to exclude women from a particular assignment. Although United States servicewomen are not given the official recognition they deserve, they are involved in military combat. Multiple rationales have been given to exclude women from engaging in combat. However, it is essential to note none of those rationales gives a reasonable basis for restricting women from engaging in combat.
In a nutshell, gender plays a vital role in combat, especially in the context of women. The task here will be to interview two women, preferably those who have served in the military before. The interview questions will revolve around their views on whether women are tough enough for military combat. I have decided to interview a woman who is a relative of mine and
her husband served in the military years ago. Another interviewee would be a coworker who served in the military before.
The interview questions will touch on areas such as fraternization, unit cohesion and male bonding, pregnancy and motherhood, and physical and psychological strength. Physical and psychological strength are important considerations in the military. However, men and women are considered unequal as far as military effectiveness is concerned. In other words, there is a belief that military effectiveness is compromised by the fact that women have lower physical and psychological stamina and strength compared to their male counterparts. Enlisted men have voiced the purported inferior physical capability of women to the effect of denying women the opportunity to fight on the frontline. In the context of physical and psychological strength, the two interviewees will be asked questions such as: Do you believe that military effectiveness can be compromised by the lack of psychological and physical stamina and strength? Do you agree that most women are physically weaker than most men? What is your take on the idea that technology reduces the need for physical strength among military women and men? Are women a weaker sex, in your opinion?
Pregnancy and motherhood are key areas to consider during the interviews. There is a belief that combat effectiveness can be hampered by pregnancy because it disrupts unit cohesion. There is also an argument that pregnancy can interfere with the armed force's ability to rapidly mobilize combat troops, for example, because it is hard to predict in advance which women in service will be pregnant and thus not be available during deployment. It would be appropriate to say that pregnancy is a major concern not only among the public but also in the military. In the context of pregnancy and motherhood, some questions to ask the interviewees include:
Pregnancy is an important stage in the life of a woman, including those in the army. Do you believe combat effectiveness is hampered by pregnancy? Do you think army military policy should provide temporary replacements for pregnant personnel? What is your take on women being excluded from engaging in some forms of combat on the basis of pregnancy? Is pregnancy a legitimate reason to exclude a woman from military service? Does excluding all women from all positions qualify to be called an extreme response?
Unit cohesion and male bonding will be another area of focus during the interviews. Interpersonal relationships between military leaders and troops play a crucial role in troop cohesion. The leader should have the ability to not only to create but also sustain the interpersonal skills that will facilitate the building of strong ties with the men. There is a false belief that men will lose troop cohesion if they end up sharing their duties with women. This has been used as an excuse to exclude women from military combat in the United States. In the context of unit cohesions and male bonding, some questions for the interviewees will include: What is your take on troop cohesion? What can be done to enhance troop cohesion? There is a belief that the presence of women can adversely affect troop cohesion. Is this true? Do you believe men sharing their duties can lead to the loss of unit cohesion?
The last area of focus of the interviews will be fraternization. The idea behind fraternization is that troop effectiveness can be diminished by the inevitable sexual attraction and behavior caused by mixing men and women in units. There is also fear that men will focus on getting sexual favors from their female counterparts instead of focusing on the mission. This argument on fraternization seems to ignore the fact that the sexes can interact with each other in non-sexual ways, especially under tough combat circumstances. Therefore, in the context of fraternization, the two interviewees will be asked questions such as: Is it possible for women in
uniform to work with their male counterparts without fraternization? How do you think we can best address the issue of women in combat? Do you believe ineffective leadership contributes to fraternization in the military?
In conclusion, the debate on whether women should be included in combat continues to be a topic of discussion today. Interviewing women who have been in the military will provide first-hand information from people who have actually experienced military life.
