One of the main ways was when the tulip made its way into Turkey and the hearts of the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and the people there. They would throw extravagant festivals every year when the tulips would bloom. Because of his love for tulips, the Sultan was removed from the throne as he would spend a large amount on the flower. The tulip also made its way to the Dutch people who fell in love with the beauty of the flower. This love led to what is known as the "tulip mania". Having tulips was a symbol of wealth and prosperity to the Dutch people. A recent "mania" that took place that closely relates to the "tulip mania" is that of beanie babies. Beanie babies, like the tulip, have no real intrinsic value as they were originally retailed at $5 or less. However, at the height of their popularity the stuffed toy Patti the Platypus fetched a price tag of $6,000; the princess bear was worth $500,000 and even today is worth $50,000.
