Project Description Clinicians treating patients in the intensive care unit generate several data elements, some of which are collected manually and some of which are collected by systems attached to a clinical information system (CIS). Entries into the CIS could include things like vital signs, admission information, diagnosis, treatment prescription, progress notes, equipment outputs, or test results. The information and outputs from the CIS populate medical record systems and therefore can be shared with other clinicians. Heath care professionals would use this data to make evidence-informed decisions about the patient. The finance department would use this data for billing purposes. The purchasing department would use this information for ordering purposes. Researchers would use this information to conduct patient and healthcare analysis. Intensive care units using CIS have experienced a number of benefits such as increased efficiency, improved quality of care, increased data availability, reduction of errors, and increased data security. Although there have been many benefits to the adoption and integration of CIS in intensive care units, there have been disadvantages related to errors in design and functionality that have caused decreased efficiency, among other issues. You are part of a project team responsible for the selection, design, and implementation of a CIS in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
