CHM 2012 Experiment 3A: Making Polymers1 Procedure: Polystyrene Synthesis: 1) Dispense approximately 5 mL of styrene into a test tube and subsequently add 0.25 g of benzoyl peroxide. Mix the solid until dissolved. 2) Heat the styrene reaction mixture in a boiling water bath until the reaction mixture has solidified (approximately one hour). Confirm the consistency of the polystyrene with a glass stir rod before cooling it to room temperature. 3) Once cool, attempt to obtain a small sample of your polystyrene with tweezers. If you have trouble collecting a small sample of polystyrene for solubility evaluations consult with your GSA. 4) Add small quantities of your polystyrene samples into test tubes. Determine the solubility of your polystyrene samples in acetone, toluene, and ethanol. Use approximately 5 mL of solvent in each trial. Nylon Synthesis: 1) Dispense 20 mL of 20% NaOH solution and 10 mL of 5% hexamethylene diamine solution into a 50 mL beaker. 2) Carefully pour 10mL of 5% sebacoyl chloride solution down the sidewalls of the reaction mixture containing beaker to preserve the sebacoyl chloride solution at the top of the reaction mixture. 3) Leave the prepared reaction mixture to rest with no agitation. Note that the intended reaction will occur at the interface between the two layers.
4) Use the provided wooden stick to slowly remove the nylon film from the interface of the two layers. Lift slowly to prevent the developing strand from breaking. Use a test tube as a reel to wind the nylon rope with. Perform these tasks slowly to maximize the length of the nylon rope. 5) Insert the test tube wound with the nylon rope into a beaker of DI water. 6) Remove the collapsed nylon from the beaker of water and dry the strands with filter paper. 7) Maximize total yield by returning to the reaction beaker and stirring the remaining unreacted monomers with a glass stir rod. 8) Pour the reaction mixture into 200 mL of ice-cold DI water and subsequently filter the reaction mixture. 9) Wash the nylon obtained on the top of the filter paper with DI water. 10) Compare the consistency/physical properties of your nylon products. Assess the solubility of the nylon in acetone, toluene, and ethanol. Use approximately 5 mL of solvent in each trial. PVA “Slime” Synthesis: 1) Dispense 50 mL of the provided poly(vinyl alcohol) solution into a 250 mL beaker. Subsequently add 5 mL of the provided borax solution to the beaker and stir the reaction mixture with a glass stir rod. 2) Characterize the properties of the gel.
