DEFINITION This is a French term (“what is put in the scene”) designating the arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a movie. The mise-en-scène refers to the scenic design of a movie or a play. It refers to everything that is put in front of the camera and is distinct from the camera position (shots and angles), camera movement (pans), and editing (montage). The mise-en-scène includes composition, settings and sets, props, actors (the quality of acting), costumes, and lighting. All these elements help shape a powerful illusion of realism and help us understand how the director envisions reality and more importantly which sense of reality the movie wants to establish and share with its public. All combined, these design elements convey the film’s singular vision by creating a sense of space and time, a mood, or even a character’s state of mind (think of Daybreak). WHY THE MISE-EN-SCÈNE ? THE GOALS OF A MISE-EN-SCÈNE STUDY ARE TO STUDY REALISM. We often take for granted or overlook the setting of a movie precisely because the illusion of realism makes us believe that the images are of an everyday world that is simply “there.” The reality of a movie is constructed for a purpose. Movies studied in this course all have a historical bent and as such we need to focus on the way reality is staged and how it is used. How does a movie attempt at creating a realistic scene? What is included and what is left out? What realistic details in the mise-en-scène relate to the actions of the characters or themes of the movie? (props, clothing, etc.) A movie may opt for realism but it is going to stylize its own sense of reality through mise-en-scène. FOUR ASPECTS OF MISE-EN-SCÈNE TO CONSIDER WHEN VIEWING A MOVIE 1. SETTINGS AND SETS (“décor”) Identify the location or the construction of a location where a scene/a sequence is filmed. Sets and settings are rarely just backgrounds since they are chosen (or built) to influence the audience and their expectations. Is the setting a studio set or on location? The studio set allows for a greater control for the director while shooting on location brings authenticity and realism. A successful set or setting should feel authentic to the story’s world. Settings and sets can provide a window into the character’s mind or describe the main theme. When you write about the settings or/and sets, do not simply describe it but try to discover its significance in relation to the major theme(s) of the movie. a) Give a precise description of the setting b) Analyze and explain the setting and the way it is constructed. Say why it is important and how it adds to the meaning of the movie. 2. PROPS Do some objects play a part in the setting or are they just a background? Does the arrangement of objects, props, and characters within the setting have some significance? Every prop looks like it belongs. Good movies give the setting and its objects nearly as much meaning as the characters and stories. a) Identify and describe props that seem important within the scene. b) Analyze how these props help strengthen themes and what these props convey about the characters themselves. 3. COSTUMES Clothes characters wear in the movie. These give us a key to a character’s identity. Using certain colors or designs, costumes are used to signify characters or to make clear distinctions between characters. Is there a special feature of a costume that helps you analyze the character? a) Identify and describe clothes worn by the main protagonists. b) Question why characters look and dress the way they do. Do their costumes suggest how they view themselves or how they wish to be viewed by others? 4. LIGHTING The intensity, direction, and quality of lighting may influence the viewer’s perception of characters, actions, themes and mood. See the different ways a character, an object, or a scene is illuminated (natural sunlight, artificial light, and low light like a candle?). Lighting is important as it helps direct a viewer’s attention or to create a certain atmosphere. Darkness typically conveys gloom while bright light conveys optimism and clarity. Look for patterns of light and shadows. Look at whether lighting seems natural or unusually artificial. There are 3 main types of lighting approaches: → High key lighting: very bright and few shadows (comedies, musicals) → Low key lighting: diffused shadows and atmospheric pools of light (mysteries, thrillers, horror movies) → High contrast lighting: great contrasts between lights and darks (tragedies, melodramas) a) Identify and describe the type(s) of lighting used in the movie. b) Analyze how the movie uses lighting and the possibilities and purpose it allows within the movie.
